Illuminae Review...

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

REVIEW!!!

Okay people when I picked this book up, at the store, I was both intrigued and worried that I would not enjoy it.  When I started reading and it took me almost an entire month to really get into the book the worry continued but I pushed on and didn't give up.  Now I can't wait to read book two in the series.

So this book follows Kady and Ezra as they fight to survive the attack on not only their home planet but now the ships they are stuck on.  A plague breaks out on one of the ships in the fleet, then the AI on one of the ships goes crazy and finally the enemy ship that is chasing them  catches up.  The only people who know everything that is going on can't do anything about it because they aren't supposed to know what they do.  What more could possibly go wrong?  Will anybody survive the journey to any civilization?

Now I did struggle to get through the first 30% of this book because I didn't really feel like anything fit together.  I felt like the story was disjointed because we were getting it from two characters points of view.  Eventually though these characters started talking to each other and it became a little easier to follow.  The story was still disjointed because it is simply put a bunch of random files meshed together to tell a story about what happened to these characters as they try to figure out what is going on with their fleet and how to stay alive long enough to make it home.

The characters from what I could piece together were well formed and well written.  The authors writing styles meshed well together.  The unique way they pieced this book together, the story it told and the fun graphics/artwork within this book was amazing.  However, because of the randomness of the files within this book I felt like there were flow and pacing issues.

I'm not going to lie...I totally got lost in it when I got home one night.  I had about 300 pages when I got home from work.  Before I knew it, it was almost 10 pm and I still hadn't eaten anything for dinner.  I hadn't heard anybody else come home.  I was entranced in the book.  I can't wait to read the second book real soon.

4.5 stars!
